As parents, it is only natural to want your little one to have the same love for the outdoors. However, before you take them out onto long hiking trails, it is imperative that they have the correct footwear. And, to keep the kiddos happy, comfortable, and trucking along, we’ve put together a list of our favorites.

What Makes a Kid’s Hiking Boot?

Children’s feet are still developing and this means incorrect footwear can affect how the feet grow. We know the future discomfort is the last thing you would want for your child. So, before committing to any particular pair of hiking boots, be sure to check over the following factors.

  1. Comfort: Boots for kids should be comfortable. Kids still need the support, structure, and form that adults are used to in hiking boots. It may not be a long journey, but they should be happy the entire hike.
  2. Durability: Let’s be honest, kids aren’t the most thoughtful with their hiking gear. Boots for kids should be made well and durable enough to hold up all season.
  3. Stability: Hiking boots are usually structured above the ankle to provide ample stability on varied terrain. A great pair will have good mid-foot structure as well to keep your little one from rolling their ankles. We’ve dedicated this post to boots as opposed to hiking shoes or sandals for this reason.
  4. Traction: Depending on your terrain, hiking boots should be ready to provide good grip on any surface.
